Remembering the True Meaning of Memorial Day

Memorial Day is, first and foremost, a solemn day of remembrance for the men and women of our Armed Forces who paid the ultimate sacrifice in service to the United States of America.

It is a day set aside not for celebration alone, but for reflection, gratitude and remembrance of those who never returned home to their families and communities.

Here in Yorktown, Memorial Day carries an even deeper connection to our nation’s history as we also recognize the Revolutionary War 250 commemoration. While RW250 is an important reminder of our nation’s founding and the sacrifices made by the first Americans who fought for independence, it reinforces the true meaning of Memorial Day — honoring those throughout our history who gave their lives defending freedom.

This year, as we rededicated one monument and unveiled two new monuments honoring the founders and patriots of our nation, we were reminded that remembrance is not simply about preserving stone and bronze. It is about preserving the stories, sacrifices and ideals that built this country. These memorials stand not only as tributes to the Revolutionary generation, but as symbols of the enduring American tradition of service and sacrifice that has continued through every generation since.

From the patriots of the Revolutionary War to the brave men and women who served in conflicts across generations, Memorial Day reminds us that liberty has always come at a cost. Generations of Americans answered the call to serve knowing they might never return home, believing that the ideals of freedom, democracy and country were worth defending with their lives.

The courage shown by our founders established a legacy of sacrifice and service that continues today through the members of our military. Memorial Day gives us the opportunity and responsibility to ensure that legacy is never forgotten.

Memorial Day is not about politics or division. It is about honoring duty, courage, sacrifice and love of country. It is about remembering the empty seats at family tables, the folded flags handed to loved ones, and the generations of Americans who gave everything so that future generations could live free.

This Memorial Day, may we pause to remember those heroes. May we honor their sacrifice not only with ceremonies and words, but by striving to be worthy of the freedoms they preserved for us.
