Yorktown officials celebrated the grand opening of W.S. Jeung Taekwondo on Sunday at its new location 1905 Commerce Street in Yorktown Heights.
The martial arts school has operated in Yorktown for 26 years and the new 2,500-square-foot location offers students a larger space. The school describes itself as a place that creates genuine human relationships, nurtures personal fulfillment, and enhances mindfulness.
“I’d like to congratulate Philip (Jeung) and his family,” said Supervisor Ed Lachterman. “It’s not just a business, you’re serving our community, working with our children, and giving them something to build upon, so God bless you. That’s an amazing thing and our children need it.”
The school’s founder, Grandmaster W.S. Jeung, began his marital arts training in Paju, South Korea at the age of 8 and he attended Yong In University, one of his country’s top martial arts institutions. He opened his school in 1998, shortly after immigrating to the United States.
“Our community, our family, our students, our parents, that’s what makes it very special here,” said Grandmaster Jeung’s son Philip Jeung during a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
W.S. Jeung Taekwondo serves children from 4 years to adults six days a week. Besides physical fitness, the school’s lessons emphasize goal setting, courtesy, and character development.
