Town Responds To Students’ Paving Request

Updated: Sep 5

Yorktown High School students that drive to school will have a smooth start to the academic year after a major facelift of the commuter parking lot next to the campus.

Resurfacing work at the Downing Park commuter parking lot began on Monday with crew laying new asphalt. The approximately $250,000 rehabilitation is expected to be completed by the end of the week, and the student lot will be fully striped by the first day of school.

For years, students have navigated cracked and uneven surfaces, and many brought their concerns directly to the Town Board.

“This was really the kids, not only advocating, but petitioning their local government to get something done,” said Supervisor Ed Lachterman. “We listen to all the voices out there.”

The work at the commuter lot is the latest public amenity improvement.
